Spiro·naut Feature: Jules Hallsworth

Our Spiro•nauts are dreamers, storytellers & story-makers, creating out-of-this-world experiences that defy gravity. They come from all backgrounds & walks of life, sharing their unique, interesting (and hilarious) stories to introduce you to their authentic selves.

Meet Spiro·naut Jules Hallsworth, Executive Creative Director with a passion for designing environments that excite & unite audiences. With over 30 years of experience, Jules has learned how to balance home & work life by making time to enjoy hobbies.

So, head down to the beach, hoist the mainsail & take a peek into Jules’ world!

What superpower do you bring to work?

Being that my brain is right-side-dominant, I was destined to develop an obsession with the form of objects; how they look within environments, how people engage with them in relation to a given space & what happens when the positions of those objects change.

With over 30 years of discovery in what works & what doesn’t, I favor the “less is more” approach, underpinned by simplicity, minimalism, functionality & how that translates beyond traditional rectangular frames, shaping meaningful interaction.

How do you refine & sharpen your skills?

I still favor live, on-site experiences to stay up to date on trends, but regular discovery calls with the wider design team, exploring innovation in particular categories, help us all stay up to date.

Being able to collaborate to brainstorm ideas is invaluable, if time allows. Working remotely in the post-pandemic era has challenged us to find new ways to develop skills and remain ahead of the competition.

What excites you about your work & our industry?

With rapid change, our emotions have come to the foreground & that has influenced how clients want to be perceived and how experiences & engagement need to appeal to all five senses. The speed at which events have returned makes me feel that design hasn’t just survived, but it’s going to prosper & thrive through innovation & change.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done or place you’ve visited?

The coolest thing has to be flying over Manhattan in an open-door helicopter & taking photos with my feet on the landing skids. I remember feeling the hot air rising over the financial district as we flew up to Liberty Island.

The coolest (no pun intended) place would be on the tundra near Churchill Manitoba, taking ice-core samples at -30° C (-22°F) as a volunteer assisting with global warming research.

What makes Spiro™ stand out from other agencies?

Our ability to attract & hold some of the most brilliant creative minds in the industry globally!

What’s an interesting fact that people may be surprised to learn about you?

I’m studying for my RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course, so I can sail around the west coast of Scotland & explore the islands with my family.

I enjoy firing up a furnace to bend metal & distract me from my weekday challenges on the chair, and when I start a hike, I don’t stop until I reach the summit.

What else would you like to share from your world?

Having recently moved to the West Coast of Scotland, beach combing at lunchtime with our dogs never fails to clear my head & put things into perspective. Sometimes leaving your screen is the best thing you can do to re-ignite creativity.
